Australian Solar Incentives

Federal Solar Panel Rebate (Small-scale Technology Certificates)

The federal government provides an upfront discount through the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). When you install an eligible solar system, you receive Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) based on your system size and location.

Typical savings for a 6.6kW system in 2026:

  • NSW (Sydney): ~$2,000
  • Queensland (Brisbane): ~$2,000
  • South Australia (Adelaide): ~$1,600

Important: The STC rebate reduces every year and will be phased out by 2030. Installing in 2026 means you'll receive approximately 16.7% less than in 2025, so acting sooner maximises your savings.

How it works:

  • Your One Power Solar quote automatically includes the STC discount
  • We handle all paperwork and certificate creation
  • The discount is applied at point of sale—no waiting for rebates

Eligibility:

  • System must be under 100kW capacity
  • Installation by Clean Energy Council (CEC) accredited installer
  • Components must be on the CEC approved list
  • All One Power Solar installations meet these requirements

Cheaper Home Batteries Programme (Federal Battery Rebate)

From July 1, 2025, the Australian Government provides approximately 30% off the upfront cost of installing eligible home battery systems.

How much you can save:

  • Battery rebates are valued at approximately $300 per usable kWh
  • Example: A 10kWh battery = ~$3,000 discount
  • Example: A Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5kWh) = ~$4,050 discount

Important changes from May 1, 2026:

The rebate structure will become tiered to encourage right-sized battery systems:

Additionally, the rebate will decrease every 6 months (rather than annually) through to 2030. Please reach out to One Power Solar & Electrical to confirm the latest figures.

What this means:

  • Installing before May 1, 2026 gives you the maximum rebate
  • Systems under 14kWh will continue to receive the full discount
  • Sizing your battery to your energy needs is now financially rewarded

How it works:

  • The discount is applied upfront at installation
  • One Power Solar handles all certificate creation and paperwork
  • No need to apply separately—it's automatic

Eligibility:

  • Property must have solar panels (new or existing)
  • Battery capacity between 5kWh and 100kWh
  • Installation by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) accredited installer
  • System must be VPP-capable (no requirement to actually join a VPP)
  • One battery rebate per property

NSW

New South Wales Solar Incentives

NSW Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Incentive

NSW homeowners with batteries can earn $400 to $1,500 by connecting to a Virtual Power Plant under the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme.

Rebate amounts:

  • 10kWh battery: $400-$500
  • 27kWh battery: $1,000-$1,500

How it works:

  • Your battery is connected to a VPP network
  • During peak demand, your stored energy may be drawn to support the grid
  • You receive upfront payment for participation
  • You maintain control of your energy storage

Eligibility:

  • Battery must be installed after July 1, 2025
  • Connection must be through an accredited certificate provider
  • Can be stacked with the federal battery rebate

Important: The NSW state battery rebate programme ended June 30, 2025. The VPP incentive is now the primary state-level battery benefit.

Solar for Apartment Residents (SoAR) Grant

Multi-unit dwellings can access up to $150,000 per building to cover up to 50% of the cost of installing shared solar systems.

Eligibility:

  • Residential owners' corporations or body corporate
  • Apartment buildings and strata properties
  • Projects must be completed by October 2026

Contact One Power Solar to discuss eligibility for your building.

NSW Feed-in Tariff

NSW homeowners receive payment for excess solar energy exported to the grid. Current rates range from 6-12 cents per kWh depending on your retailer. We recommend comparing retailers every 6 months to ensure you're getting the best rate.

QLD

Queensland Solar Incentives

Queensland Solar Panel Rebate (STCs)

Queensland homeowners benefit from excellent sunshine, which means higher STC values—particularly in regional areas.

Regional advantage:

  • Brisbane (Zone 3): ~$2,000 for 6.6kW system
  • Regional QLD like Townsville, Cairns, Rockhampton (Zones 1-2): $2,000-$2,200 for 6.6kW system

Regional Queensland properties in Zones 1-2 may receive slightly higher rebates due to higher solar generation potential in those zones.

Queensland Solar for Rentals Programme

Landlords can receive up to $3,500 for installing solar on rental properties, reducing tenant electricity bills by approximately $700 annually.

Benefits:

  • Increased property value
  • Attract environmentally conscious tenants
  • No cost to tenants

Queensland Feed-in Tariff

Queensland offers some of Australia's most favourable feed-in tariff rates, typically ranging from 8-12 cents per kWh in South East Queensland (Energex network).

Important note: The Queensland Battery Booster Programme closed on May 8, 2024. The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Programme has replaced this state incentive.

SA

South Australia Solar Incentives

SA Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Incentive

South Australia offers one of the most generous VPP incentives in Australia—up to $2,050 for connecting your battery to a REPS-approved Virtual Power Plant.

How it works:

  • Connect your battery to a participating VPP
  • Receive upfront payment for participation
  • Your battery helps stabilise the grid during peak demand
  • Can be stacked with federal battery rebate

Eligibility:

  • Battery must be connected to REPS-approved VPP
  • New or existing battery installations qualify
  • Minimum 6 years remaining on manufacturer's warranty (for existing batteries)

Adelaide City Council Solar Incentive

Residents in Adelaide City and North Adelaide postcodes can access additional support:

Residential incentives:

  • 20% discount on solar panel installation for concession card holders, tenants, and strata properties
  • 50% rebate up to $1,000 for residential battery installations

Business incentives:

  • 50% rebate up to $1,000 for battery installations
  • 50% rebate up to $2,000 for replacing gas or wood-burning appliances with electric/solar

These local incentives can be stacked with federal rebates.

South Australia Feed-in Tariff

SA feed-in tariffs typically range from 6-10 cents per kWh. With South Australia's high retail electricity prices, solar provides exceptional value even with modest feed-in rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to apply for the rebates separately?

No. All federal rebates (STCs for solar and batteries) are processed by One Power Solar and applied as an automatic discount on your quote. For state-level incentives like VPP programmes, we'll guide you through any required steps.

Can I combine multiple incentives?

Yes. You can typically stack federal STCs with state-level VPP incentives and local council rebates. Your One Power Solar quote will show all applicable incentives for your location and circumstances.

What if I already have solar and just want to add a battery?

You can still claim the Cheaper Home Batteries Programme rebate. Properties with existing solar systems are eligible—you don't need to install new solar panels to access the battery rebate.

How much will incentives reduce in 2027?

Federal STCs reduce by approximately 16.7% on January 1 each year until 2030. The battery rebate will decrease every 6 months from May 2026 onwards. Installing sooner maximises your savings.

Are these incentives means-tested?

The federal solar and battery programmes are NOT means-tested—all eligible homeowners can access them regardless of income. Some specific state programmes (like council rebates for concession card holders) may have eligibility criteria.

How long do these programmes last?

Given the reducing rebate values and programme end dates, 2026 remains an excellent time to invest in solar and storage:

- Federal solar rebate (STCs): Phases out by 2030
- Federal battery rebate: Runs through 2030 (subject to continued funding)
- State VPP incentives: Ongoing programmes

What if I already have solar and just want to add a battery?

You can still claim the Cheaper Home Batteries Programme rebate. Properties with existing solar systems are eligible—you don't need to install new solar panels to access the battery rebate.

Time-sensitive savings: Both federal solar and battery rebates decrease over time. Installing in early 2026 (before May 1) maximises your battery rebate, while every year you wait means smaller solar panel discounts.

Budget limitations: The Cheaper Home Batteries Programme has expanded to $7.2 billion through 2030, but with over 1,500 batteries being installed daily across Australia, demand is high. There is no guarantee the funding will last until 2030.

Eligibility requirements: All systems must be installed by accredited professionals using approved components. One Power Solar & Electrical meets all certification requirements, and our installations are designed to qualify for every applicable incentive.

Programme changes: Government incentive programmes are subject to change, funding limitations, and eligibility requirements that may be updated at any time. The information in this guide is accurate as of February 2026.
